CASI Project

The CASI project, funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020, promotes public participation in developing a framework to manage sustainable innovation focused on climate action, resource efficiency, and raw materials.

2012 · Branding · Strategy · Research and Analysis · Wireframes · Prototype · Interface Design · Creative Direction · Product Design

Background

CASI is an EU-wide cross-sectoral partnership that integrates perspectives from government, business, civil society, policy stakeholders, researchers, and academia. Its goal is to consider both social and technological innovations and how different actors affect and are affected by sustainability policies.

CASI developed a methodological framework for assessing and managing sustainable innovation through active public engagement and participation of diverse societal stakeholders. The project employed a collaborative analytical process called “mapping” to identify and describe over 160 sustainable innovation cases across Europe, analyzing these from multiple perspectives including government, business, civil society, and research at strategic, tactical, and operational levels.

Key objectives included developing a working definition of sustainable innovation, incorporating public concerns such as inclusiveness and ethics, and fostering mutual learning among stakeholders. CASI conducted consultation workshops involving citizens to embed their values and concerns into innovation assessment. It produced comprehensive case studies, policy briefs, and recommendations aiming to enhance understanding and policymaking for sustainable innovation. CASI also established a knowledge co-creation and management tool (CASI-F) to support economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Overall, CASI emphasizes innovation as a driver for societal progress with sustainability at its core, aiming to guide EU and national policies to support sustainable innovation diffusion and its positive social, economic, and environmental impacts

I successfully drove a broad channel of communication among all the partners, developers and stakeholders, designed a compelling brand, and set the foundations for the online experience, the interface of the platform, and its design manual.

My involvement in CASI project started back in 2012 and finished in May 2017. I was in charge of the design of an online platform for a European Commission-funded project focused on sustainable innovation. This project had a large consortium of 19 European partners from 12 different countries. I did the branding, strategy, user experience research, analysis and the logical approach. I also designed the interface covering a responsive solution, primarily focused on desktop and tablets, but also mobile.

Challenges, goals, and takeaways

The biggest challenge of this project was the communication and alignment between many different requirements, partners, wills, limitations, and goals.

The main goal was to create, on one side, a platform where scientists and professionals could exchange knowledge, information, and manage events, workshops, and papers. On the other hand, a broader audience should be able to access part of this content in a comfortable, fast, and transparent way.

Branding

I developed the logotype by integrating CASI’s three foundational pillars into the structure of the letter A. This approach conveyed the brand’s core principles while reinforcing recognition and visual coherence.

Content Structure & Sitemap

The sitemap organizes content from a central “Home” into main sections like About, News & Calendar, Library, Blog, and several topic banks (Ideas, Action, Vision). Each section breaks down into detailed subsections, such as News details, Events, Policy briefs, and user-focused areas like profile and contributions. The structure is clear and modular, with consistent pathways for content exploration, user actions, and confirmation/error handling, supporting both information delivery and interactive tasks.

Dedicated paths for user actions and contributions are included, such as profile management (My profile, User profile, My documents), and areas for posting ideas, actions, visions, or discussions. Each of these sections includes steps for adding content with confirmation and error handling screens.

The flows include both shallow and deep navigation trees, supporting focused tasks (like uploading a document) and more complex user journeys (such as mapping a case or following an agenda in event details).

sitemap

Wireframes

The wireframes were developed using insights from interviews, the content audit, user research, data analysis, and best practice standards. Starting with the key user journeys, I designed wireframes for the core screens. These were then turned into interactive prototypes to test how effectively users could navigate and accomplish their goals with clarity and ease.

wireframes

Interface

The interface was inspired by simplicity, clarity, space and the usage of images related to the organic and inorganic beauty that can be found when admiring the details and textures of matter.
